Sumiyoshi Matsuri is one of Osaka’s most significant and spiritually powerful festivals, marking the end of summer with an elaborate purification ritual. Held at Sumiyoshi Taisha Grand Shrine, this three-day event is believed to cleanse the entire city of Osaka, attracting countless visitors eager to witness its majestic processions, traditional performances, and sacred ceremonies.
✔ Portable Shrine Washing Rite (Marine Day in July) – The festival begins with the ritual purification of a 2-ton mikoshi (portable shrine) in Sumiyoshi Park, preparing it for its grand journey.
✔ Yoiyama Festival (July 30, 8:00 PM) – The night before the main purification, the shrine is illuminated with lanterns and traditional performances.
✔ Regular Festival & Summer Nagoshi Harai Ritual (July 31, 5:00 PM) – The Nagoshi Harai purification ritual features Nagoshiko girls in elegant costumes, who perform sacred wreath-passing ceremonies, believed to cleanse participants of impurities. This ritual is a designated Folk Cultural Property of Osaka Prefecture.
