The tour showcases the legendary Ritsurin Garden, a masterpiece of landscape design that has been meticulously maintained for four centuries, alongside the innovative spirit of the Setouchi Triennale. You will discover why Takamatsu is celebrated as the “City of Water” as you explore a castle with a seawater moat and witness the breathtaking views of the Seto Inland Sea from the Yashima plateau.

Guided by a licensed English-speaking professional, you will travel in a private vehicle to navigate the city’s highlights efficiently. With our Back-to-Ship Guarantee, you can delve deep into the art and history of the region, knowing your return to the Takamatsu pier is perfectly synchronized with your ship’s departure.

Highlights

  • Ritsurin Garden: Wander through a sprawling 17th-century landscape garden featuring six ponds and thirteen landscaped hills, often considered more beautiful than Japan’s three “official” great gardens.
  • Mt. Yashima: Visit this historic lava peninsula to take in panoramic island views and participate in the traditional clay plate throwing (kawara-nage) to ward off evil.
  • Yakuriji Temple: Ascend via cable car to this sacred mountain temple, part of the famous 88-temple pilgrimage, known for its dramatic rock face backdrop and octagonal hall.
  • Takamatsu Castle Park: Explore the ruins of Tamamo Castle, one of the only seaside fortresses in Japan where the moat ebbs and flows with the tide.
  • Setouchi Triennale Art: Encounter contemporary installations from the world-famous art festival that has transformed the islands of the Seto Inland Sea into an open-air museum.

Cruise Information

This 7-hour shore excursion is meticulously synchronized with the docking schedules of major cruise lines at the Port of Takamatsu. We provide seamless logistics for passengers arriving on the Diamond Princess, MS Westerdam, Celebrity Millennium, and Queen Elizabeth.

Your private guide and driver will meet you directly at the Takamatsu port exit with a Jasumo welcome board immediately upon your ship’s arrival. Because our destinations are spread across the city and Yashima peninsula, private transportation is the most effective way to see all five major sites in a single day. We guarantee your return to the pier at least one hour before the “all aboard” time, providing a worry-free and enriching day of discovery.

Full Itinerary

Your exploration begins at Takamatsu Port, where you will head directly to Ritsurin Garden. For over 100 years, the garden was a private retreat for the Matsudaira Lords. You will walk through the South Garden’s pine-rimmed ponds and perhaps stop for matcha at the Kikugetsu-tei teahouse, which offers a “moon-scooping” view of the water. Each step in this garden is designed to offer a new, intentional perspective on the landscape.

Next, you will travel to the Yashima peninsula. This site is famous as the location of the 12th-century Genpei War battles. You will visit the mountaintop observation decks for sweeping views of the Setouchi islands and participate in the local tradition of throwing unglazed clay plates to ward off misfortune. Nearby, you will visit Yakuriji Temple. A charming cable car ride takes you to this “Healer’s Temple,” where you can admire the Gofuden, an octagonal hall dedicated to an ancient monk, and explore the impressive art collection housed on the grounds.

In the afternoon, you will experience the modern side of the region through the Setouchi Triennale art sites. Depending on the season, you will see various contemporary installations that reflect the connection between the sea and local island life. The journey concludes at Takamatsu Castle Park. Here, you can see the surviving turrets (yagura) and the unique seawater moat. Before returning to the port, don’t miss the chance to try Sanuki Udon, the chewy local noodle specialty that put Takamatsu on the culinary map. Your driver will then escort you back to the port in time for your cruise departure.

Faqs

What makes Ritsurin Garden different from other Japanese gardens?

Ritsurin is the largest “Special Place of Scenic Beauty” garden in Japan. Unlike smaller zen gardens, it is a “strolling garden” designed for exploration, featuring 1,400 artistically manicured pine trees and spectacular views of Mt. Shiun, which serves as a natural backdrop.

How do we reach the mountain temples during the tour?

We use a private vehicle to reach the Yashima summit comfortably. For Yakuriji Temple, the most popular and scenic way to reach the main grounds is via the nostalgic Yakuri Cable Car, which offers beautiful views of the rock face during the short ascent.

Is the Setouchi Triennale only held every three years?

While the main festival occurs every three years, many of the most iconic art installations and architectural projects are permanent and can be visited year-round. Our tour focuses on these high-impact permanent pieces located in and around the Takamatsu city area.

Why does Takamatsu Castle have a seawater moat?

Takamatsu Castle, also known as Tamamo-jo, was built as a “water castle” directly on the Seto Inland Sea. It is one of only three in Japan where the moat water is salty and fluctuates with the sea’s tide, often allowing seawater fish to be seen within the castle walls.

Can we try making our own Udon noodles on this tour?

Takamatsu is the “Udon Capital” of Japan. While this tour focuses on a tasting of the local specialty, we can customize your private itinerary to include a session at a local “Udon School” where you can knead and cut your own noodles to music.
