Overview
The Tohoku Kizuna Festival celebrates the rich cultural heritage of Japan’s Tohoku region, uniting the six prefectures of northern Japan—Aomori, Akita, Iwate, Yamagata, Miyagi, and Fukushima. Traditionally held in early August, the festival was initially established to commemorate those lost in the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011, but over time, it has grown to showcase the pride, unity, and revival of the Tohoku region through its vibrant festivals. In 2025, however, the festival will be temporarily suspended in its usual form and will instead be featured at the 2025 Osaka-Kansai Expo, making it a special occasion for visitors.
Festival Highlights
The Tohoku Kizuna Festival traditionally features an incredible parade with approximately 1,000 dancers, bringing together the essence of each Tohoku prefecture. Visitors can experience:
