History

The Toyoda Gosei Rink first opened in 2018 as a collaboration between Oasis 21 and Toyoda Gosei Co., Ltd., a major Toyota Group company specializing in synthetic resins and rubber. The rink introduced Japan’s first large-scale outdoor synthetic ice surface made from a special high-molecular polyethylene material that mimics real ice glide while staying completely dry.

Unlike traditional ice rinks that require massive refrigeration and constant resurfacing, this eco-friendly plastic panel system uses no water or electricity for cooling, reducing environmental impact. The concept quickly proved popular in urban Nagoya, offering a longer season and safer falls for beginners and families.

Now in its eighth year, the rink has become a beloved winter landmark in Sakae, drawing over 100,000 skaters annually with its convenient downtown location and forgiving surface.

Overview

The Toyoda Gosei Rink 2025-2026 will operate from November 29, 2025 to March 8, 2026 atop Oasis 21’s iconic Galaxy Platform in central Nagoya. The 600㎡ synthetic rink provides a unique “ice” skating experience that never gets wet—even if you fall—and works in any weather, allowing an extended season from late autumn through early spring.

Skate rental is included in the admission price, and the rooftop setting offers sparkling night views of Sakae’s skyline. Gloves are mandatory (bring your own or buy on-site for ¥200–¥300).

Highlights

  • Dry Synthetic Surface: Glides like ice but stays completely dry—no wet clothes, even after falls.
  • Beginner-Friendly: Softer landings than real ice, perfect for first-timers and kids.
  • Rooftop Sakae Views: Skate under the stars with Nagoya’s city lights and Oasis 21’s glowing “Water Spaceship” roof.
  • Long Season: Runs 100+ days from late November to early March, including pre-open and winter break periods.
  • All-Weather Operation: Plastic panels work in rain or shine—no cancellations due to melting or freezing.

FAQs

Is the synthetic surface really like real ice?

Yes—Toyoda Gosei’s special plastic panels provide 90–95% of real ice glide while staying dry and requiring no refrigeration.

Do I need to bring my own skates?

No—rental skates are included in the admission price. Socks are recommended.

Are gloves mandatory?

Yes—for hygiene and safety. Bring your own or purchase at the venue (¥200–¥300).

Can beginners skate here?

Absolutely—the softer surface makes falls much less painful, and staff offer support for first-timers.

Is the rink open on rainy days?

Yes—since there’s no real ice, rain doesn’t affect operation (though the rooftop may feel windy). Umbrellas are not allowed on the rink.
