Step into the refined world of traditional Japanese wagashi (和菓子) and experience the artistry of handcrafting beautiful, edible works of art. This workshop offers hands-on instruction in creating two classic types of Japanese sweets: Ohigashi (dried sweets) and Nerikiri (bean paste sweets) — both deeply rooted in Japanese tea ceremony culture.
Guided by expert instructors in a peaceful Kyoto studio, you’ll learn to mold, shape, and decorate seasonal wagashi using authentic ingredients and traditional tools. This activity is suitable for all ages and requires no prior experience.
What You’ll Do
- Learn the history and cultural significance of wagashi
- Use 100% Wasanbon sugar, a premium fine-grained sugar made in Japan, for Ohigashi
- Create Nerikiri using specially sourced sweet bean paste from a well-known Kyoto confectioner
- Handle authentic wooden molds hand-carved by skilled artisans
- Choose to enjoy your creations on-site with green tea or take them home as a souvenir
