Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, popularly called Daikoku or Daiku has become a year‑end tradition across Japan. When I attend a performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony in December I feel the warmth of a custom that has lasted more than a hundred years. Local choruses sing together with orchestras and regional voices join distinguished soloists and conductors to welcome the close of the calendar year.
The Utsunomiya Ninth Symphony Chorus brings together the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra under conductor Daichi Deguchi. I hear soprano Junko Ueda, mezzo‑soprano Yayoi Masuda, tenor Takashi Otsuki and baritone Eijiro Kai. I see how their voices blend into one beautiful sound. Chorus training by Akihiro Nishiguchi makes the local singers achieve artistic harmony. This concert is a musical gathering in Tochigi Prefecture and I feel proud to be part of it.
For travelers a Daiku performance in Utsunomiya gives insight into civic classical traditions and shows that classical talent can thrive outside big cities. I am excited to share this experience with people from, over the world.
