Contact Jasumo Now →Yamato Japanese Taiko was started in 1993 by Masa Ogawa in Nara Prefecture—the area known for its history of Japanese culture. For than thirty years Yamato Japanese Taiko has been changing the way people see traditional percussion around the world. It all began as a group playing at a temple festival. Now it is a group that has played more, than 4,800 times in 55 different countries. Yamato Japanese Taiko does not see wadaiko as an old object or something used only in ceremonies. Instead Yamato sees the drum as an lively way for people to express themselves. This style of music is often called music.
Yamato Japanese Taiko has a lot of power in their music. It comes from a big group of custom taiko drums. They have than 40 drums and each one is unique and looks really cool. The main drum is the Odaiko, which’s huge and made from a tree that is 400 years old. It is really heavy about 500 kilograms. It is almost two metres across. When they play the Odaiko it makes a sound that you can feel on the floor and in your body. Around the Odaiko are lots of drums like the shime-daiko and nagado-daiko and they also have traditional brass cymbals. All of these instruments together make a complex sound with many rhythms.
The people who perform with Yamato Japanese Taiko have to be in shape. They work out every day starting with running and lifting weights before they even pick up their drumsticks. When they are on stage they move around with a lot of energy and precision. They wear colorful costumes that are inspired by traditional clothes and they play the drums with their whole body.

While overseas tours take place in concert halls Japanese domestic shows place the group in their own acoustic environments and cultural setting. Performing in front of audiences creates a special kind of energy where small theatrical moments, call-and-response shouts and local humor feel real and meaningful.

The small hall design makes sure that the sound reaches the audience directly giving a physical feeling.
