Festival Origins – A 450-Year-Old Tradition

The Yokote Kamakura Festival has its roots in the Edo period, originally held as a ritual to honor the water deity Suijin-sama. Families would build kamakura and enshrine a small altar inside, offering prayers for a prosperous year and good harvests.

Even today, visitors are welcomed into the igloos with a friendly greeting:
