One of Japan’s Most Enigmatic and Fiery Celebrations
Step into a world of glowing flames, ancient rituals, and spiritual energy at the Yoshida Fire Festival, one of Japan’s three strangest festivals and among the top 10 fire festivals in the country. Held annually on August 26th and 27th in the historic city of Fujiyoshida, this 450-year-old celebration marks the traditional end of the Mt. Fuji climbing season and serves as a spiritual ritual to appease the sacred mountain.
he Yoshida Fire Festival in 2025 has a variety of ticket options, but generally, the festival itself is free to attend.
Known locally as “Chinkasai” (literally “fire calming festival”), the Yoshida Fire Festival is a dynamic fusion of mysticism, heat, and history. The festival is jointly hosted by Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine and Suwa Shrine, both deeply rooted in the spiritual landscape surrounding Mount Fuji.
On the first evening, over 100 massive 3-meter torches, shaped like bamboo shoots, are ignited along a 2-kilometer stretch of road in Kamiyoshida, bathing the town in a surreal and mesmerizing glow. These torches are lit after two sacred mikoshi (portable shrines)—Omyojin-san and Oyama-san—are carried through the streets in a vibrant, rhythmic procession.
By the next day, the fervor continues as the mikoshi make their return journey to the shrine, cheered on by worshippers carrying Susukino Tamagushi (sacred pampas grass offerings). The event culminates in an emotional and spiritual high that leaves locals and visitors deeply moved.
