In Japan, a “Miko” is a Shinto shrine maiden, traditionally seen as mystical guardians of the shrine. This unique experience invites you to dress in a Miko’s costume and immerse yourself in the revered traditions and customs surrounding these sacred figures. This activity is open to ladies aged 12 and above.

What is a Miko?

You may have seen young women at shrines wearing white robes and red skirts. These are known as “Miko” (巫女) in Japanese. Historically, Miko served as shamans, but today they act as assistants to Shinto priests. They are trained in the proper behavior and rituals required within the shrine.

Schedule of the Shrine-Maiden Experience

• Costume dressing
• Ceremonial manners (purifying, ringing bells, etc.)
• Sweeping the shrine precinct
• Formal worship (sanpai)
• Short lecture on shrine customs
• Photo session (You can wear a Chihaya, a formal jacket, and Kanzashi, a hair accessory, during photos and take pictures anywhere in the shrine)
