Step into the Heart of Kyoto’s Timeless Summer Festival

The Gion Matsuri (祇園祭), one of Japan’s most iconic and ancient festivals, returns in 2025 to captivate Kyoto with its month-long celebration of tradition, spirituality, and community spirit. Originating over 1,100 years ago to ward off epidemics, this grand festival is centered around Yasaka Shrine and features elaborate parades, vibrant rituals, and a magical atmosphere that fills the city streets every July.

Festival Highlights:

  • Yamaboko Junko Parade (山鉾巡行): Witness the stunning procession of massive floats (yamaboko) towering up to 25 meters high, decorated with intricate textiles, carvings, and lanterns. These floats, known as “moving art,” glide through the streets of Kyoto on July 17 and July 24.
  • Yoiyama Evening Festivities: Immerse yourself in the magical pre-parade nights (July 14–16, July 21–23) where the streets are closed to traffic and lined with food stalls, traditional music, and illuminated floats. Stroll along while savoring local delicacies and festival sweets.
  • Hoko Float Viewing: Get up close to the beautifully crafted floats during static displays in the days leading up to the parade. Some floats allow visitors to climb aboard and admire the craftsmanship from within.
  • Traditional Performances & Rituals: Enjoy classical Noh theater, kagura (Shinto dance), and other performances held at Yasaka Shrine throughout the festival.
  • Nagoshisai Purification Ceremony: On July 31, experience the closing purification ritual, where participants pass through a large grass ring (chinowa) to pray for health and protection from misfortune.

Event Details:

  • Dates: July 1–31, 2025 (Main parades on July 17 and July 24)
  • Location: Throughout Kyoto (Main events near Yasaka Shrine and Shijo-dori)
  • Admission: Free (Some special viewing seats may require tickets)
