Matsue Suitoro (水燈路), also known as the Matsue Water Lantern Festival, is one of Japan’s most atmospheric night events, held each autumn in the scenic castle town of Matsue, Shimane Prefecture. “Suitoro” means “water lantern path,” and the event lives up to its poetic name by filling the historic streets and waterways with soft, flickering lights.

Organized by the Matsue Light Up Caravan within the Matsue Tourism Association, the event transforms the area around Matsue Castle—one of Japan’s few remaining original castles—into a glowing dreamscape of traditional lanterns, shadow plays, and light installations.

Highlights

  • Horikawa Nighttime River Cruise
A once-a-year opportunity to ride a small wooden boat through the castle’s moat under the night sky. As you float gently down the Horikawa River, you’ll be treated to views of the Shiomi Nawate historic district, softly lit by hundreds of lanterns lining the banks.
  • Lantern Displays and Light Installations
Thousands of handmade lanterns line the pathways, bridges, and stone walls of Matsue Castle. Some feature artwork created by local children, artists, and residents, adding a warm, community-driven spirit to the magical visuals.
  • Traditional Music & Performances
Select nights include live music, traditional dance, or storytelling, all lit by lantern light to evoke the atmosphere of Japan’s Edo period.
  • Food Stalls and Local Crafts
The castle grounds also host small night markets with regional cuisine and artisanal goods, letting visitors enjoy local flavors while strolling through the illuminated grounds.
