What to Expect
Explore southern Hokkaido’s natural wonders with this full-day tour departing from Sapporo. Discover serene lakes, steaming volcanic valleys, majestic mountains, and more—all with the guidance of a local expert. Ideal for nature lovers and first-time visitors to Hokkaido.
Tour Highlights
Noboribetsu Jigokudani (Hell Valley)
Located northeast of the Noboribetsu Onsen area, this 450-meter-wide volcanic crater was formed by an eruption of Mt. Hiyori. The valley features numerous steaming fumaroles and hot springs. Its barren, otherworldly landscape has earned it the nickname “Hell Valley.” Boardwalks allow visitors to explore this geothermal wonder safely.
Lake Toya
This picturesque caldera lake stretches approximately 11 km east to west and remains unfrozen throughout the winter, making it Japan’s northernmost non-freezing lake. With crystal-clear waters and panoramic views of Mt. Usu and surrounding volcanic landscapes, it’s a must-visit in every season.
Mount Yotei (Optional Scenic Viewpoint)
Often called “Ezo Fuji” due to its resemblance to Mt. Fuji, Mt. Yotei is one of Hokkaido’s most iconic peaks. Weather permitting, travelers can enjoy scenic views of this majestic, snow-capped volcano during the journey.
Showa Shinzan Bear Ranch (Optional Stop, Admission Not Included)
Home to over 100 Ezo brown bears, this ranch allows visitors to observe and feed bears from elevated platforms. It’s a fun and educational stop for families. (Admission: approx. 850 yen)
Mt. Usu or Lake Hill Farm (One Stop May Be Included Based on Schedule)
- Mt. Usu (Optional): Take a ropeway (extra fee) to see panoramic views of the active volcano and its lava domes.
- Lake Hill Farm: A peaceful countryside stop where you can enjoy homemade soft-serve ice cream, dairy products, and local souvenirs. The farm is especially beautiful during flower seasons.
Lake Shikotsu (Seasonal) – Ice Festival (Winter Only)
If traveling during winter, enjoy a bonus stop at Lake Shikotsu to witness the spectacular Ice Festival, known for its illuminated ice sculptures and frozen waterfalls made with lake water. The lake itself is crystal clear and highly transparent.
