What to Expect
Embark on a one-day cultural journey from Nagoya to three of central Japan’s most picturesque and historically significant locations:
- Hida Takayama – a beautifully preserved town with Edo-period architecture
- Miyagawa Morning Market – a lively riverside market offering local foods and crafts
- Shirakawa-go Gassho Village – a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its thatched-roof houses and rural charm
First Stop: Hida Takayama
Immerse yourself in this charming town surrounded by Japan’s Northern Alps. Famous for its preserved Edo-period architecture, it’s a wonderful place to stroll narrow streets, enjoy traditional wooden houses, and sample Hida beef, a local delicacy renowned for its high marbling and rich flavor.
Second Stop: Miyagawa Morning Market
One of Japan’s best-known traditional markets. Browse a wide variety of fresh produce, handmade crafts, pickled goods, and local snacks. It’s the perfect place to soak up regional life and pick up authentic souvenirs.
Third Stop: Shirakawa-go Gassho Village
Step into a living postcard. This remote village features dozens of gassho-zukuri houses — traditional farmhouses with steeply pitched thatched roofs designed to withstand heavy snowfall. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995, Shirakawa-go offers a window into traditional Japanese mountain life. Explore the open-air museum, scenic observation decks, and quiet village paths surrounded by nature.
Whether you’re drawn by history, culture, architecture, or breathtaking scenery, this itinerary offers a deeply enriching and memorable day out from Nagoya.
