What to Expect
Experience the natural beauty and cultural charm of Geibikei Gorge, one of Japan’s officially designated National Natural Monuments. Located in Ichinoseki City, Iwate Prefecture, this picturesque limestone gorge is celebrated for its dramatic cliffs, crystal-clear waters, and serene landscapes. Recognized as one of the “100 Most Scenic Spots in Japan,” Geibikei offers a tranquil escape into nature, making it a perfect destination for couples, families, photographers, and nature enthusiasts alike.
The highlight of your visit is a traditional 90-minute river boat ride steered by skilled boatmen using long wooden poles — a method known as “sao-zukai.” As you glide gently along the calm Satetsu River, you’ll pass through towering cliffs that rise up to 100 meters high. The journey spans about one kilometer each way, with a 15-20 minute stop at the turnaround point where you can disembark and explore further into the gorge on foot.
One of the key attractions is the “Lion Nose Rock” (Shishigahana-iwa), a massive rock formation said to resemble a lion’s nose. This iconic feature gives the gorge its name — “Geibi” meaning “lion nose” in Japanese.
Depending on the season, you’ll be treated to vivid cherry blossoms in spring, lush greenery in summer, striking autumn foliage, or a snow-draped winter wonderland, making this activity a year-round favorite.
