A Home-Cooked Cultural Feast in Tokyo’s Hidden Gem

Step into a peaceful Tokyo neighborhood and into the welcoming kitchen of Junko, a former concierge turned cooking instructor, for a hands-on culinary adventure filled with tradition, flavor, and connection. Her cozy home in Ōmori, just 20 minutes from Tokyo Station, is the setting for one of the most heartfelt Japanese food experiences you’ll find.

Unlike crowded tourist classes, this is a private and intimate session—maximum 4 guests—ensuring plenty of time for guidance, storytelling, and laughter.

What You’ll Learn and Cook

This 4-hour class includes a local market tour and full meal preparation. Here’s what’s on the menu:

🥟 Handmade Gyoza

Gyoza, or Japanese pan-fried dumplings, are a household staple and izakaya favorite, beloved for their crispy shell and juicy fillings. While they originated from Chinese jiaozi, Japanese gyoza have evolved into a distinct national comfort food.

In this class, you’ll start from scratch—mixing dough, rolling out wrappers, filling and pleating by hand. Gyoza making is often a family activity in Japan, and Junko brings that warm, communal energy to the experience.

For tourists, gyoza is an approachable yet satisfying gateway into Japanese cooking. Plus, you’ll learn how to make and freeze them—perfect for your own dinner parties back home.

🍳 Tamagoyaki (Japanese Rolled Omelette)

Tamagoyaki is a fluffy, sweet-savory rolled omelet made in a rectangular pan, often served in bento boxes or atop sushi.

In Japanese cuisine, tamagoyaki represents a balance of technique and care. The layers must be folded just right to achieve the perfect texture. For visitors, it’s a fun challenge—and a delicious reward—that teaches control, patience, and precision.

Junko will show you how to get that golden finish and signature soft bite.

🍓 Strawberry Daifuku (Sweet Mochi)

Daifuku, or sweet mochi, is a quintessential wagashi (Japanese confectionery). This version wraps a whole fresh strawberry in sweet red bean paste and chewy mochi.

Junko’s recipe is not only delicious, it’s also designed to be recreated easily at home. You’ll learn how to knead and stretch freshly steamed glutinous rice dough—and even slice the finished daifuku using a thread, just like a true wagashi artisan.

Tourists love mochi, but few get the chance to make it by hand, much less in a local’s kitchen. It’s sticky, fun, and extremely photogenic—perfect for sharing and remembering.

🛍️ Local Market Tour

Before cooking, Junko will guide you through her neighborhood shops—including a tea vendor, Japanese sweets shop, and supermarket. You’ll learn how locals shop and what to look for in real Japanese ingredients.

This part of the experience gives travelers a rare, off-the-beaten-path look at everyday Japanese life. You’ll also get great tips for food souvenirs or ingredients to bring home.
