Tour Overview

Escape the bustling city for a day and discover the tranquil beauty of Lake Biwa, Japan’s largest freshwater lake. This full-day guided tour combines cultural immersion, natural landscapes, and local artistry. Designed for travelers who want to explore unique and scenic locations not often found in mainstream itineraries.

The tour includes visits to four carefully selected destinations in Shiga and northern Kyoto, with seasonal flexibility to ensure an enjoyable experience all year round.

Itinerary (Subject to seasonal/weather adjustments)

Stop 1: Shirahige Shrine – Shiga Prefecture

Shirahige Shrine, believed to be over 2,000 years old, is one of the oldest Shinto shrines in the Ōmi Province. Its iconic torii gate appears to float on the waters of Lake Biwa, creating an awe-inspiring view that changes with the light and weather. Early morning and dusk offer particularly magical photo opportunities. The shrine is dedicated to Sarutahiko-no-Ōkami, the deity of longevity and guidance.

Stop 2: Seasonal Option (based on travel date)

A. Biwako Valley Observation Deck (Available August 9 – November 4)

Take a scenic ropeway ride to the Biwako Valley Observation Deck, located at an elevation of approximately 1,100 meters. The deck provides panoramic views of Lake Biwa and the surrounding mountains. On clear days, you can see the horizon where sky and lake merge. There are also restaurants and walking trails nearby for a relaxed visit.

B. Sanzen-in Temple, Kyoto (Available November 5 – April 15)

This historic Tendai-sect temple, founded in the early Heian period, offers a serene atmosphere and beautifully landscaped moss gardens. The temple features the Ojo Gokuraku-in Hall, famous for its Amida Buddha statue, as well as adorable stone Jizo statues hidden among the moss. Sanzen-in is also known for its seasonal flowers, including cherry blossoms, hydrangeas, and vibrant autumn foliage. Guests can enjoy matcha tea in a traditional setting overlooking the gardens.

Stop 3: Mangetsu-ji Temple & Ukimido Hall

Located along the northern shore of Lake Biwa, Mangetsu-ji Temple is home to the Ukimido (Floating Hall), a wooden pavilion extending over the lake via a stone causeway. This site is one of the “Eight Views of Ōmi” and is celebrated in Japanese poetry and art. The hall enshrines a statue of the Kannon Bodhisattva and provides a quiet place for reflection with views of the calm, glistening lake.

Stop 4: La Collina Omihachiman

Designed by renowned architect Terunobu Fujimori, this confectionery complex is built to harmonize with the surrounding hills. The “Grass Roof House” is covered with living greenery and has become a symbol of sustainable architecture in Japan. At La Collina, guests can sample Japanese and Western sweets made by the famed confectioner Taneya, watch the baumkuchen cake production process, and shop for unique gifts and snacks. The area also features small exhibitions, cafés, and walking paths.
