Full Description

Join a private, immersive culinary tour that begins at the western entrance of Nishiki Market, a centuries-old food street known as “Kyoto’s Kitchen.” With a fluent English-speaking local guide by your side, you’ll explore the market’s traditional shops, sample unique foods, and learn the history and customs behind Kyoto’s cuisine.

Instead of rushing through the market, you’ll spend quality time discovering ingredients and talking with shopkeepers (with help from your guide). Ask questions about unfamiliar foods, learn how they’re used, and get real local insights.

The highlight of the experience comes next: you’ll use the ingredients purchased in the market to cook your very own donburi (rice bowl) dish in a nearby studio kitchen. Choose from three classic varieties:

  • Kaisen-don – seafood
  • Ten-don – tempura
  • Oyako-don – chicken & egg

Vegetarian substitutions are available upon request. The cooking class is fully guided, personal, and paced just for you. You’ll also receive a recipe so you can recreate the dish at home.

“A wonderful experience. Our guide walked us through Nishiki Market and pointed out the original stalls among the touristy ones. She accommodated my brother’s tofu substitution and made the cooking part really enjoyable. Highly recommend this activity!”

“Start to finish, we loved this experience! Our host gave great recommendations in the market and helped us focus on the best parts. The cooking studio was cozy, and the donburi we made was delicious.”

“Chie was so kind, fun, and knowledgeable. She shared great cooking tips, history of the shops, and even advice on sauces and brands. As an avid home cook, I found this tour incredibly insightful.”
