About the Product

The AF-S Fisheye NIKKOR 8-15mm f/3.5-4.5E ED features an advanced optical design of 15 elements in 13 groups, including three Extra-low Dispersion (ED) lenses and two aspherical lenses. This sophisticated construction is necessary to manage the extreme curvature and ensure excellent resolution and minimal color fringing across the image area.

It utilizes the Internal Focusing (IF) system with a Silent Wave Motor (SWM) for fast and quiet autofocus. The lens also includes Nano Crystal Coat to suppress ghosting and flare, which is important given the lens’s vast field of view that often includes bright light sources. The Fluorine Coat on the front element repels dirt and moisture, aiding maintenance during travel.

Faqs:

What is the difference between circular and diagonal fisheye?

A circular fisheye (achieved at 8mm on FX) projects a fully circular image onto the sensor, surrounded by black borders, giving you a true 180° view in all directions. A diagonal (or full-frame) fisheye (achieved at 15mm on FX) fills the entire rectangular sensor area but still maintains the characteristic dramatic curvature, offering a 180° view across the diagonal of the frame.

Does this lens work on my Nikon DX (APS-C) camera?

Yes, it works on compatible Nikon DX bodies (which must support E-type lenses). When used on DX, the lens is capable of capturing a maximum 180° diagonal fisheye image between the DX index mark (around 11mm) and 15mm. It will not produce the circular fisheye effect on a DX camera.

Why does this lens require an E-type compatible camera?

This is an E-type lens, meaning it uses an electromagnetic diaphragm to control the aperture blades electronically, not mechanically. This requires modern Nikon DSLRs (e.g., D5600, D7500, D850) for accurate and consistent aperture control. If your camera is an older model, please check compatibility with E-type lenses before renting.

Is the extreme distortion difficult to use for travel photos?

While the fisheye lens produces noticeable, curved distortion, it is used specifically for creative effect. It emphasizes size and scale, making it excellent for dynamic shots of architecture or crowded scenes. Learning to center horizontal lines in the frame can sometimes minimize the curvature for a more stylized, though still extremely wide, look.

Can I attach a standard filter to the front of this lens?

No. Because the lens features a bulbous front element necessary to achieve the 180° field of view, it cannot accept standard screw-on filters. It does, however, have a filter frame at the rear of the lens mount for special, cut-to-size gelatin filters, which are not included or available for rental.
