About the Product

The AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR features an optical construction of 17 elements in 12 groups. To maintain high sharpness across the substantial zoom range, it incorporates two Extra-low Dispersion (ED) elements and three Aspherical lens elements. The Nano Crystal Coat is included to significantly reduce the internal reflections that cause ghosting and flare.

The VR II (Vibration Reduction) system is highly effective at minimizing blur from camera shake. The lens uses the SWM (Silent Wave Motor) for quick and quiet autofocus. A key feature is the M/A mode, which enables the photographer to instantly switch to precise manual focusing simply by turning the focus ring, without needing to change switches on the lens or camera body.

Faqs:

Why should I choose the constant f/4 version over a variable aperture kit lens?

The constant f/4 aperture offers two major advantages: first, it provides consistent exposure settings as you zoom, simplifying workflow. Second, it allows more light into the camera than the typical f/5.6 or f/6.3 apertures found on most entry-level zoom lenses at the long end, which improves low-light performance and allows for better subject isolation.

What does the VR II Image Stabilization do for this lens?

The VR II system effectively reduces camera shake, allowing you to shoot handheld at shutter speeds slower than typically recommended. This is particularly useful in lower light environments or when shooting at the 120mm telephoto end, helping to ensure that your images remain sharp and blur-free.

What is the effective focal length when mounted on a Nikon DX (APS-C) camera?

When mounted on a Nikon DX-format camera, the 24-120mm focal length is effectively multiplied by 1.5x, giving you an equivalent field of view of approximately 36mm to 180mm. This transforms the lens into a short telephoto zoom, excellent for portraiture and isolating subjects, though the wide end becomes less wide.

What is the benefit of the M/A mode?

The M/A mode (Manual-priority Autofocus) allows the photographer to seamlessly override the autofocus and make immediate manual focus adjustments simply by rotating the focus ring. This is highly beneficial for fine-tuning focus when the camera’s AF system slightly misses the intended subject, or when shooting subjects with complex compositions.

How do the ED and Aspherical elements maintain quality across the zoom range?

The 2 ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements correct chromatic aberration, which causes color fringing. The 3 Aspherical elements correct spherical aberration and distortion. In a zoom lens that covers a large range (24mm to 120mm), these elements are essential for ensuring high sharpness, contrast, and minimal distortion from the wide end through the telephoto end.
