Complete Details

Your Kyoto cultural immersion begins with a warm welcome at your terminal. Your guide and driver will be waiting at the Osaka or Kobe pier (often referred to as the gateway to Kyoto) to whisk you away in a premium chartered vehicle.

The morning starts in West Kyoto at Arashiyama. You will experience the surreal beauty of the Bamboo Grove and take a scenic drive past the Togetsu-kyo Bridge. We then continue to the iconic Kinkakuji, where your guide will share the history of the Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu and the temple’s resilience through the centuries.

After a traditional Japanese lunch (included), you will step into the world of the samurai at Nijo Castle. Here, you can hear the “nightingales” sing—the unique squeaking floors designed to detect intruders. We then move to the eastern hills to visit Kiyomizu-dera, one of Japan’s most celebrated UNESCO sites. The day concludes with a stroll through Gion, the legendary geisha district. If you’re lucky, you may spot a maiko (apprentice geisha) heading to her evening appointment. Finally, relax on a direct drive back to your ship, arriving well before your “all aboard” time.

FAQs

Which port will my ship dock at for Kyoto?

While many itineraries list “Kyoto” as the port, ships actually dock at the Port of Osaka or Kobe Port. Both are roughly 60–90 minutes from Kyoto. We coordinate with the port authorities to ensure your driver is waiting at the exact berth assigned to the HAL Westerdam.

What kind of lunch is included?

We typically provide a high-quality traditional Japanese set meal (Teishoku) which may include tempura, seasonal vegetables, rice, and miso soup. Please let us know in advance if you have specific dietary requirements such as vegetarian or gluten-free.

Is there a lot of walking on this tour?

This is a comprehensive tour, so there is a fair amount of walking involved, particularly at Kiyomizu-dera (which has some inclines) and the Bamboo Grove. However, since we use a private vehicle to travel between sites, the physical demand is significantly less than a walking or train-based tour.

Will we definitely see a Geisha in Gion?

Geisha sightings are a matter of luck and timing, as they are professional artists on their way to work. However, your guide knows the best lanes and times for potential sightings and will share the fascinating history of the geiko and maiko culture.

Does the “Back-to-Ship Guarantee” cover traffic delays?

Yes. Our “Back-to-Ship Guarantee” is our promise that we monitor traffic and your ship’s schedule in real-time. We always plan to have you back at the pier at least 1 hour before departure. In the extremely rare event of a delay that causes you to miss your ship, we would coordinate and cover your transport to the next port.
