Overview

Step into a piece of living history at the Former Ozaki Theodora Residence, a stunning light blue Western-style building nestled in the quiet neighborhood of Gotokuji. Originally constructed in 1888 for Theodora Ozaki, the daughter of a Japanese baron and a British mother, this architectural gem was saved from demolition through the passionate efforts of a preservation project led by legendary manga artists. Today, it serves as a unique cultural sanctuary where the elegance of the Meiji era meets the vibrant world of Japanese manga and illustration.

Faqs

What is the “Afternoon Tea + Gallery” ticket option?

This is a combined admission ticket that allows you to view the Minako Narita exhibition and enjoy a specially curated tea service in the residence’s historic coffee room. Because the cafe has limited seating, these tickets are sold in small quantities and often sell out well in advance of the exhibition dates.

Can I use cash to pay for original goods or cafe items inside the building?

The Former Ozaki Theodora Residence operates on a strictly cashless basis throughout the entire facility, including the gallery shop and the cafe. Please ensure you have a credit card, IC card (like Suica or Pasmo), or a compatible mobile payment method ready for any purchases made during your visit.

What happens if I arrive late for my reserved admission time?

The venue maintains a strict entry policy to manage the flow of visitors within the historic residence. If you are more than 30 minutes late for your specified time slot, your reservation will be automatically canceled. Please note that no refunds are provided for cancellations due to late arrival.

Is the residence accessible for visitors with strollers or mobility issues?

Due to the historical nature and preservation status of the building, there are no elevators or escalators installed. Strollers are not permitted inside the building, and visitors must be able to navigate stairs to view the gallery. There is also no private parking or bicycle parking available on the premises.

How is the exhibition divided between the First Term and Second Term?

The Minako Narita FINAL exhibition is split into two distinct periods to allow for a changeover of fragile original manuscripts. The First Term runs from late February to March, while the Second Term begins in late March. Different artworks and color manuscripts will be featured in each term to showcase the full breadth of her career.
