The Story: A Legacy of Musical Excellence in Shinshu

Founded in 1992 by the late and famous conductor Seiji Ozawa, the event—originally called the Saito Kinen Festival Matsumoto—was made to keep alive the teaching methods and the spirit of Hideo Saito, an important person in Japanese music education. For than thirty years the festival has become a famous cultural place around the world. At the heart of the festival is the Saito Kinen Orchestra (SKO) a group of top Japanese musicians who play in big orchestras all over the world along with famous guest musicians from other countries.

Helped by the beauty of the Japanese Alps and the strong support from the local people the festival makes Matsumoto a lively center of symphonic and small music groups every summer. The 2026 version continues this tradition with a great list of conductors and soloists. OMF Principal Guest Conductor Nodoka Okisawa leads the Saito Kinen Orchestra in Olivier Messiaen’s 20th-century work the Turangalîla Symphony, with pianist Keigo Mukawa and Ondes Martenot soloist Setsu Harada. A famous conductor named François-Xavier Roth makes his debut leading the SKO in Anton Bruckner’s big Symphony No. 8 In C minor (Haas edition) giving a special look at the history of the music.

In addition to the symphonic events at Kissei Bunka Hall the 2026 program includes a special series of small music performances at Matsumoto City The Harmony Hall. Celebrating the year since the death of Toru Takemitsu—one of Japan’s most famous modern composers—these quiet performances match Takemitsu’s touching music with works, by Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy. The festival also helps musicians by offering the OMF Chamber Music Study Session, where talented young woodwind players show what they have learned from a special training program led by experienced SKO members.
