The Story: The Culture and Atmosphere of the Grand Sumo Regional Tour

The regional tour, known in Japanese as ‘Jungyo’, is a loved tradition in the world of Grand Sumo. While the six main tournaments held every two months in cities like Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya are very competitive and high-pressure, the regional tour gives a personal, fun and special look into the everyday lives, training and history of Japan’s top wrestlers.

Grand Sumo Summer Tour Soka

This tour started during the Edo period to bring sumo to different parts of the country. Jungyo brings wrestlers—including those in the elite division like Sekitori, Ozeki and Yokozuna—directly to local areas. The summer tour in Soka is an event returning to the city for the first time, in eight years. It is held at the Enecru Sports Arena SOKA, which’s the Soka City Sports Center. This one-day event gives people a range of sumo culture that goes beyond just the final match.

Sumo Tour Day Highlights

A normal tour day starts early in the morning with public training sessions. People can watch the work, warm-ups and practice matches up close. This is followed by ceremonies and educational shows that are not usually seen during regular tournaments.

  • Jinku: Traditional, comedic, and soulful folk songs sung unaccompanied by sumo wrestlers in the ring, detailing life in the stables and local regional lore.
  • Shoki-mizu / Shokitoku: Demonstrations of ceremonial ring etiquette and traditional techniques.
  • Shokkiri: A hugely popular comedic sumo performance where two lower-ranked wrestlers intentionally commit illegal moves (kinjite) and absurd fouls to explain the rules of the sport through humor.
  • Yagura-daiko: Traditional drumming demonstrations performed on high wooden towers to announce the start and end of the tournament day.

As the afternoon goes on things get more serious. It is time for the real competition. The wrestlers come into the ring. It is a big deal. They wear these cool aprons called kesho-mawashi that have a lot of fancy stitching on them. The best wrestlers do this ceremony called the Yokozuna. Then the rest of the day is filled with matches between the sumo wrestlers. It is really exciting to watch the sumo wrestlers compete in person because every seat in the arena is close, to the ring and you can see everything that is happening. The sumo competition is very intense. People love to watch the sumo wrestlers fight.

Why Experience It Live

Going to a Grand Sumo Tour event is a way for people from other countries to really experience one of Japans oldest traditions. It is very different from the tournaments at Tokyos Ryogoku Kokugikan where everything is very formal. At the Grand Sumo Tour people can watch the sumo wrestlers practice. See the special ceremonies they do before they fight. They can also feel the excitement of the crowd close.

If you are visiting the Kanto region, Soka City in Saitama is a place to go for a day trip from Tokyo. You can spend the day watching sumo. Then learn about the citys history. Soka City is famous for its senbei, which’s a kind of rice cracker that people have been making there for a very long time. So going to the sumo. Then learning about senbei makes for a really interesting and authentic day out. The Grand Sumo Tour and Soka Citys senbei tradition are a combination, for people who want to learn about Japans culture.
