K-BALLET TOKYO was started in 1999 by Tetsuya Kumakawa. He used to be a Principal dancer with The Royal Ballet. Now K-BALLET TOKYO is one of the most exciting ballet companies in Japan.
Tetsuya Kumakawa wanted to create a company in Tokyo that could make ballets that are just as good as the old European ones. He also wanted K-BALLET TOKYO to be really exciting to watch.
K-BALLET TOKYO did a ballet called Cleopatra. It was first performed in 2017. It was a big deal. Cleopatra is one of the things that Tetsuya Kumakawa did when he was in charge of K-BALLET TOKYO, as the Artistic Director and the Director and the Choreographer.
The production brings the dramatic history of Ancient Egypt to vivid life through classical technique seamlessly merged with expressive, modern narrative pacing. Set to the dramatic, sweeping music of Danish composer Carl Nielsen and played live by the Theater Orchestra Tokyo under the baton of conductor Katsuhiro Ida, the ballet explores the tumultuous life, political intrigue, and tragic loves of Egypt’s last active ruler.
Cleopatra is renowned for its demanding principal roles, lavish costumes, and cinematic staging. The production showcases the full breadth of the company’s talent, presenting alternating star-studded casts across its run. In the featured Tokyo performance on Sunday, 27 September 2026, Nozomi Kinoshita takes the title role of Cleopatra, joined by Shoya Ishibashi as Antony, Kanta Kono as Octavian, Shiori Kase as Octavia, and Hayato Nishino as Julius Caesar. The production stands as a benchmark of contemporary Japanese theatrical production, combining elite technique with narrative grandeur.
Attending a K-BALLET TOKYO production live at Bunkamura Orchard Hall offers an artistic experience rarely matched in East Asia. The hall’s superb acoustics and intimate sightlines allow audience members to appreciate both the delicate nuances of Nielsen’s score played by a full live orchestra and the powerful athleticism of world-class dancers.
When you are in Tokyo you can see Kumakawas choreography. This is a chance to see Japanese dance at its best. If you go to a K-BALLET show the room is filled with people who really like the performance. It is a way to remember your trip, to Japan. Kumakawas choreography and K-BALLET are really examples of Japanese art. You will like the show. Remember it for a long time.
