Fumio Fujisawa, who is a playwright and a director started this project in 2017 with room NB, which’s a part of the Sony Music Group. The READING HIGH noir 4th Performance changed everything for dramatic reading shows. This brand took a style of storytelling also turned it into a huge show that feels like a massive event. They use lights and big sets also they even have live orchestras playing at big places, like the Tokyo Garden Theater.

READING HIGH noir 4th Performance

In 2024 the creative team introduced READING HIGH noir Performance, a sister brand designed to contrast the dazzling large-scale spectacles of the main lineup. Noir focuses on emotional resonance, structural simplicity also narrative intimacy stripping away massive staging to prioritize rich acoustics, intricate scriptwork also peak dramatic performance.

The fourth show under the noir style brings back HYPNAGOGIA, a tale focused on the mental condition called hypnagogia—the strange state of being just before falling asleep, where dreams and real life mix together. The story is, about a pianist whose memories, wishes also visions come together.

The 2026 production features a distinguished main cast alongside a double-cast female lead:

  • Yoshihiko Aramaki (as the Pianist): Marking his debut in the READING HIGH series, Aramaki is a dominant figure in Japan’s 2.5D theatrical world, celebrated for his commanding stage presence also producer roles.
  • Masanari Wada (as the Doctor): Also making his series debut, Wada brings extensive experience across stage plays, screen productions, and live broadcasts.
  • Ayahi Takagaki & Saori Hayami (as the Dream Female Role): Appearing as a double cast, voice acting icons Takagaki (returning to the franchise since 2020’s El Galleon) and Hayami (reprising her acclaimed role from the previous run) alternate performances to offer unique interpretations of the enigmatic dream entity.

Note that HYPNAGOGIA is perform entirely as a spoken dramatic piece accompanied by live instrumentation; there is no vocal singing during the performance.
