Ticket format for City Lights Ballet Tickets in Tokyo: To be confirm.
The National Ballet of Japan presents City Lights as a new full-length ballet, and the production is a headline work in the company’s 2026 to 2027 season at the New National Theatre in Tokyo. The ballet adapts Charlie Chaplin’s 1931 silent film, in which the Tramp devotes himself to a blind flower seller. Chaplin remains a much-loved figure among Japanese audiences, and a story told without words suits a ballet audience in Tokyo well.
English choreographer Alastair Marriott, a principal character artist of the Royal Ballet, has created the choreography. Marriott previously revised the choreography for Miyako Yoshida’s production of Giselle for the National Ballet of Japan, so the company and the choreographer already share a working history.
Chaplin wrote an original score for City Lights Ballet Tickets, his first original film score. Timothy Brock, a specialist in Chaplin’s music, has adapted the score for live orchestra, and the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra plays it in the theater. Dick Bird designs the sets and costumes.
The run opens with a world premiere on 23 October 2026 and continues to 1 November 2026, so the Sunday matinee on 25 October 2026 falls on the opening weekend of the ballet’s existence. An overseas visitor in Tokyo that weekend can see a Chaplin classic reimagined as ballet, with the film’s own score played live, at the moment the work first reaches the stage.
