Upon arrival in Fukui, you’ll be greeted by its quirky dinosaur statues, honoring the region’s rich paleontological history. Take a moment to explore and snap some fun photos before heading toward the Fukui Castle ruins, where original stone walls and a faithfully reconstructed bridge tell stories of Japan’s feudal past. Uniquely, the prefectural government buildings now sit within the former castle grounds.
Nearby, visit a shrine known for its vibrant origami cranes, a powerful symbol of peace and hope. Then, continue to Zuigenji Temple, which houses two historically significant rooms relocated from Fukui Castle. These rooms, once used by the daimyo (feudal lords), feature intricate, colorful interiors preserved from the Edo period.
Next, climb the Atagozaka Slope, a historic stairway leading to a hilltop shrine. At the top, enjoy sweeping views of Fukui’s skyline—a picturesque mix of old and new.
After lunch and free time in Fukui, a direct bus takes you to Eiheiji Temple, a serene complex nestled in cedar forests. Founded in the 1200s, Eiheiji is one of the principal temples of Sōtō Zen Buddhism, still active today with resident monks. Many of the wooden structures and towering trees date back centuries, creating a setting that’s both spiritual and timeless.
Wander through the temple grounds as your guide shares stories of Zen practice and Japanese religious culture. Afterward, return by bus to Fukui Station and take the train back to Kanazawa, arriving by around 6:00 P.M.

The temple visit was deeply moving, especially the opportunity to interact with a practicing Zen monk. The guide was knowledgeable, attentive, and created a relaxing experience that made the day flow smoothly. We were so impressed that we joined another tour the following day.
This tour offered a rich cultural experience. Meeting the monk at Zuigenji provided rare insight into temple life and the region’s history. Eiheiji Temple, covered in snow, was both serene and awe-inspiring. The guide provided detailed context on Buddhism and local traditions.
The day was well-paced and informative. The small temple in Fukui was a highlight, especially hearing the history of Fukui Castle and how rooms were relocated. Eiheiji Temple stood out as an incredible spiritual site, and observing monks at prayer added a unique layer of authenticity. Highly recommended.
