Esashi flourished during the Edo period as a vital port for the “Kitamaebune” trading ships, making it a cradle of Japanese culture in Hokkaido long before the development of Sapporo. On this excursion, you will witness the dramatic natural beauty of the Sea of Japan, walk through perfectly preserved historic streets, and hear the haunting melodies of Esashi Oiwake folk songs. With our Back-to-Ship Guarantee, you can venture deep into the Hokkaido countryside knowing your return to the Hakodate pier is perfectly timed for your cruise departure.

Highlights

  • Esashi Ancient District: Stroll through “Inishi-e Kaido,” a meticulously preserved street lined with traditional architecture that recreates the atmosphere of a 19th-century port town.
  • Heishi Rock: Marvel at this massive, bottle-shaped sacred rock rising from the sea, adorned with a giant straw rope (shimenawa) and steeped in 500-year-old fishing legends.
  • Merchant History: Explore the former residence of a wealthy merchant family, now a museum showcasing the opulent lifestyle and artifacts of the herring boom era.
  • Scenic Coastal Drive: Enjoy a relaxing journey across southern Hokkaido, featuring local folk music and picturesque views of the rugged coastline.

Cruise Information

This 8-hour excursion is custom-timed for passengers docking at the Port of Hakate, including those on the Diamond Princess, Celebrity Millennium, and ms Westerdam. Because Esashi is approximately a 1.5 to 2-hour drive from Hakodate, we coordinate our departure immediately upon your ship’s arrival to maximize your time in the historic district. Your private guide will meet you at the terminal with a Jasumo welcome board, ensuring a seamless transition from ship to shore.

Full Itinerary

Your journey begins at Hakodate Port, where you will board a private, air-conditioned vehicle for a scenic drive across the island. During the transit, your guide will introduce you to the local culture, perhaps even playing recordings of Esashi Oiwake, the soulful folk songs of the local fishermen that are considered some of the most difficult to master in Japan.

Upon arrival in Esashi, your first stop is the iconic Heishi Rock. This bulbous natural formation is the symbol of the town’s maritime heritage. Your guide will recount the legend of the fortune teller who threw a magic bottle into the sea to bring back the vanished herring—a bottle that supposedly transformed into this very rock. You will see the massive sacred rope wrapped around it, which is replaced annually in a vibrant local festival.

The tour continues to Inishi-e Kaido, the historic main street. Here, you will visit a Former Merchant Residence, such as the Yokoyama House. These “Udon-zukuri” style buildings served as both homes and warehouses for the “herring lords.” Inside, you’ll find intricate woodwork, traditional gardens, and artifacts that tell the story of the trade that once made Esashi “wealthier than Edo.” After a leisurely walk through the district and a stop for local snacks, you will enjoy a comfortable drive back across the peninsula, arriving at the port well before your ship’s departure.

FAQs

How far is Esashi from the Hakodate cruise port?

Esashi is approximately 70 kilometers (43 miles) from Hakodate. The drive takes about 1.5 to 2 hours each way, depending on traffic. This is why we offer this as an 8-hour tour, ensuring you have at least 4 hours to explore the town without feeling rushed.

Is this tour suitable for people who have difficulty walking?

The Inishi-e Kaido street is flat and paved, making it easy to walk. However, some of the historic merchant houses have high doorsteps and traditional flooring. Your guide can adjust the pace and select the most accessible buildings to ensure a comfortable experience for everyone.

What is the Kamome Island Festival?

If your cruise docks in early July, you might catch this festival! It involves a group of young men dressed in traditional loincloths swimming out to Heishi Rock to replace the 30-meter-long sacred straw rope. It is a powerful and spirited display of local tradition.

Can we see the “Kanrin Maru” ship in Esashi?

Yes! Esashi is the site where the famous Kanrin Maru—the first Japanese ship to cross the Pacific—sank in 1868. There is a life-size reconstruction of the ship in the harbor which can be added to your itinerary if time permits.

What should I eat in Esashi?

You should definitely try Nishin Soba (Herring Soba). As the former herring capital of Japan, Esashi is famous for its sweet-and-savory simmered herring served over buckwheat noodles. It is a true taste of Hokkaido history.
