Hoshikawa Illumination began in 2008 as a small community project to brighten Kumagaya’s winter nights and revitalize the shopping street along the Hoshi River. Local merchants and residents strung the first champagne-gold LEDs on the iconic ginkgo trees lining the boulevard, earning it the nickname “Starry River Street.”

The Hoshikawa Illumination 2025-2026 runs nightly from mid-December 2025 to late March 2026 along Hoshikawa Street in central Kumagaya. Approximately 40,000 LEDs in alternating champagne gold and ocean blue adorn the riverside ginkgo trees, creating a dreamy tunnel of light that reflects on the Hoshi River—often described as “a collaboration between the starry sky and the river.”
