Full Description

Your journey begins at Nagoya Station, where you’ll board a comfortable tour bus and head to Inuyama Castle, a national treasure of Japan built during the Muromachi period. Perched on a hill overlooking the Kiso River, this historic castle is one of the few remaining original castles in Japan and features a unique interior with four floors and two underground levels.

Next, visit Ena Gorge, a stunning man-made lake surrounded by rugged cliffs and curious rock formations shaped by erosion. Whether it’s cherry blossoms in spring, vibrant greenery in summer, autumn foliage, or birdwatching in winter, Ena Gorge offers breathtaking views throughout the year.

Continue on to Magome-juku, the 43rd station along the historic Nakasendo Road, which once connected Kyoto and Edo (modern-day Tokyo). The town is filled with traditional wooden inns, tea houses, and small shops selling regional snacks and souvenirs. Walk the stone-paved streets and soak in the Edo-period ambiance.

After lunch and sightseeing in Magome, travel to Tsumago-juku, one of the best-preserved post towns in Japan. Unlike many historical sites, Tsumago has remained free of modern distractions such as utility poles and traffic. Here, you’ll enjoy a relaxing stroll and discover what life was like for travelers on the Nakasendo centuries ago. This scenic segment of the Nakasendo Trail has earned a star in the Michelin Green Guide.

After a full day of exploration, return to Nagoya by bus and conclude your tour.

Reviews

We were very grateful for the bus transportation to each location. The guide was also wonderful, fluent in three languages.

Interesting tour, all very smooth, enough time to enjoy every location. Very kind and helpful guide.

I’m going to say 4.5–5 stars. It’ll depend on what you’re looking for. We had a really nice time and were able to see a bit of the old Nakasendo Trail all conveniently from Nagoya! If we tried this ourselves, we would have given up at some point. Magome and Tsumago are everything you’d hope for! Nice safe driver, small group—no giant tour bus!
