Isuien is a classic example of Japanese aesthetic ideals. The garden’s use of “shakkei”, or borrowed scenery, incorporates distant elements like Todai-ji’s Great South Gate and Mount Mikasa (Wakakusa-yama) into its composition. These background features are visually aligned with the foreground garden, blending near and far into a single harmonious view.
The experience concludes with a traditional matcha tea ceremony held in a garden-facing teahouse. As you sip the carefully prepared green tea, you’ll have time to relax and take in the view, fully engaging with the natural beauty and thoughtful design of the space.
