Full Description

Step into the serene world of kintsugi, the centuries-old Japanese technique of golden repair. Rather than disguising cracks, kintsugi celebrates them—honoring the story of each broken object and transforming its scars into elegant seams of gold.

Held in a quiet studio in Osaka’s Joto Ward, this workshop is led by a skilled craftsman dedicated to preserving this delicate and philosophical tradition. You’ll be guided through each step of the process:

  • Bonding ceramic shards with synthetic lacquer
  • Filling missing fragments with resin
  • Dusting the repaired lines with silver-based golden powder
  • Polishing the surface to reveal a subtle, gleaming finish

No prior experience is required. The pace is slow and meditative, allowing you to focus on the rhythm of repair and the cultural meaning behind each gesture. As you work, you’ll learn about the history and philosophy of kintsugi, and how it reflects a uniquely Japanese view of life, imperfection, and healing.

By the end of the session, you’ll leave not only with your completed pottery, but also with a deeper appreciation of resilience and beauty. Your piece—now made whole—will carry visible reminders of its journey and transformation.

Reviews

“Tomoko and her assistant Junale were both really fun to learn from. It was clear that Tomoko knew her craft incredibly well and my partner and I felt supported and encouraged throughout the whole class. It was a very calming atmosphere and we had a great time.”

“My first Kintsugi workshop was worth the trip! Super love my instructor Tanaka for patiently teaching me this amazing art of restoring broken ceramic plates. This hands-on experience of seeing something even more beautiful come out of its broken state was one-of-a-kind!”
