About Kodai-ji Temple

Founded in 1605 by Kita-no-Mandokoro, the wife of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Kodai-ji Temple is located in the scenic Higashiyama Mountains of Kyoto. The temple is known for its stunning gardens and the preservation of several buildings that have been designated as Important Cultural Properties by the Japanese Government.

The special illumination is called Saki – Flowers Without Mind, highlighting the seasonal beauty of the temple grounds during the autumn season.

Kodai-ji Temple is renowned for its garden illuminations that take place each spring, summer, and fall, and the temple remains open until 9:30 PM during these seasons. The Autumn Illumination is a particularly magical time when the temple’s traditional gardens are aglow with beautiful light setups, often coinciding with the changing colors of the autumn leaves.
