From January 31 to February 23, 2026, the Lake Shikotsu Ice Festival enchants visitors with glowing ice creations made from some of the clearest waters in Japan, turning nature’s purity into vibrant art.
This is Hokkaido’s premier winter illumination event, held in the Shikotsu-Toya National Park near Chitose. The festival features:
Sculptures of Shikotsu Blue
Crafted by spraying ultra-clear lake water with sprinklers, the ice sculptures appear naturally blue in daylight—known as “Shikotsu Blue.” These include tunnels, castles, domes, towers, and arches of frozen beauty.
Nighttime Illumination
From 4:30 PM to 8:00 PM, colorful lights breathe life into the sculptures, creating a surreal dreamscape. The shimmering hues reflect off the icy surfaces, offering a breathtaking night view.
