Full Description

Tucked away in a lush forest of over 100,000 trees, Meiji Shrine offers a peaceful retreat in Tokyo’s vibrant metropolis. This walking tour begins at Harajuku Station and leads you into the shrine grounds, where birdsong replaces the city buzz and a profound sense of calm prevails.

Marvel at the impressive 12-meter-high torii gate made from a 1,500-year-old Taiwanese cypress. Learn about the significance of walking to the side of the path, leaving the center route (seichu) for the gods. Your local guide will explain the symbolism, history, and customs tied to Shinto—the ancient Japanese belief system centered on harmony with nature and spiritual purity.

Visit the main shrine hall, where you’ll have the opportunity to offer prayers and purchase omamori (protective charms) or draw a poetic omikuji (fortune), featuring writings by Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken—complete with English translations.

After the shrine visit, unwind at the Forest Terrace Meiji Jingu. Enjoy Japanese tea and snacks at Mori no Terrace café or explore the gift shop for meaningful keepsakes like eco blocks made from fragrant camphor wood or miniature sacred sake barrels.

To complete your experience, you’ll receive a free admission ticket to the Meiji Jingu Garden, known for its seasonal flowers, peaceful teahouse, and the sacred Kiyomasa Well.
