Full Description

Escape the city for a day and immerse yourself in the natural and cultural beauty of Mount Takao—Tokyo’s most accessible mountain retreat.

Your journey begins at Shinjuku Station, where you’ll meet your friendly guide and board the train bound for the base of Mount Takao. Upon arrival, make a quick stop at the Takao 599 Museum and Nature Centre, where you’ll learn about the mountain’s diverse ecosystem and enjoy a relaxing drink at the café.

Next, board the Mount Takao cable car for a scenic ride through the forest canopy to the mountain’s halfway point. Begin your hike, stopping to visit the Monkey Park and Wildflower Garden, where you’ll see playful Japanese Macaques and colorful seasonal blooms.

Continue your journey to the Takao Suspension Bridge, a hidden gem off the main trail that offers a unique photo opportunity. Pass through a serene Cedar tree avenue and under a traditional wooden Torii gate before taking a short refreshment break to enjoy freshly made Dango, a beloved Japanese sweet treat.

Your next stop is Takao Temple, where you’ll discover the story of the Tengu statues, legendary protectors of the mountain. Soak in the sacred atmosphere before heading to the summit.

At the top, take in stunning 360° views of the surrounding forest, the Tokyo skyline, and Mount Fuji on clear days. Spend some free time relaxing, snapping photos, and enjoying a well-earned lunch from the summit café, known for its hot noodles and local flavors.

After your descent by cable car, return by train to Shinjuku, bringing your unforgettable day in nature to a close.

Reviews

“This activity was the highlight of our trip to Japan. Beth was so sweet and knowledgeable, guiding us through the trails of Mt. Takao. She was fantastic with our children and a great companion throughout the day. The hike was fun and scenic without being too strenuous. Highly recommend for anyone wanting to experience nature without venturing too far from Tokyo.”
