The Osaka Bach Choir Mass in B Minor brings one of Johann Sebastian Bach’s greatest sacred works to the stage for the choir’s 34th concert. The Mass in B minor (BWV 232) remains one of Bach’s most ambitious compositions. It combines powerful choral passages, expressive solo sections, detailed counterpoint, and impressive orchestral writing. Bach developed the work across several periods of his life before completing it near the end of his career. Therefore, the composition reflects many sides of his musical language in a single extraordinary work. The Osaka Bach Choir has built its reputation through years of dedicated work with Bach’s sacred repertoire. For this concert, the choir will present the mass with careful attention to its structure, vocal balance, and emotional depth.

Osaka Bach Choir Mass in B Minor with Jürgen Wolf
The Osaka Bach Choir Mass in B Minor will feature guest conductor Jürgen Wolf, a musician with a strong connection to Bach’s musical home in Leipzig. Wolf previously served as music director and organist at St. Nicholas Church in Leipzig, where Bach worked during the final part of his life. He also serves as an honorary conductor of the Osaka Bach Choir. His experience with the Leipzig tradition adds an interesting perspective to this performance. Meanwhile, music director Yoshifumi Hata will guide the choir’s preparation and musical expression. The performance will also feature Hata as a tenor soloist, alongside guest soloists Minami Matsubara, Hisako Yagi, and Nobuhiro Shinobe. Together, the vocalists will bring different colors and personalities to Bach’s demanding solo passages.
Osaka Bach Choir Mass in B Minor Program and Orchestra
The Osaka Bach Choir Mass in B Minor will bring together a large artistic team for this special concert. The Sachsenkammerorchestra, also known as the Saxon Chamber Orchestra, will provide the instrumental foundation. Shinji Shaku will also contribute to the performance. Their playing will support the choir while adding depth and detail to Bach’s complex orchestration. At the same time, pianist Mr. Shiromura supports the choir’s regular rehearsals with careful and precise accompaniment. These preparations matter because the Mass in B minor requires close coordination between singers and instrumentalists. Every section has an important role, from the powerful opening movements to the quieter passages that demand greater control. As a result, the finished performance can create a strong sense of unity between the voices and instruments.
Experience Osaka Bach Choir Mass in B Minor Live
Hearing the Osaka Bach Choir Mass in B Minor live offers a very different experience from listening to a recording. A large choral work depends on the acoustics of the venue, the balance between performers, and the natural resonance created inside the concert hall. The Hyogo Performing Arts Center provides an impressive setting for a work of this scale. Its concert environment allows audiences to hear the contrast between powerful choral movements, delicate vocal passages, and detailed instrumental sections. Moreover, visitors from overseas can enjoy a unique cultural experience by hearing Bach performed by a Japanese choir alongside international musical collaborators. For classical music enthusiasts, the 34th concert offers a memorable opportunity to experience one of the Baroque era’s most celebrated masterpieces in a live Japanese performance.
