The Sado Island Galaxy Art Festival (Sado no Shima Ginga Geijutsusai) launched in 2024 as a tri-seasonal contemporary art project aimed at revitalizing the island through culture and tourism. Organized by the Sado International Art Promotion Organization, it invites Japanese and international artists to create site-specific works that respond to Sado’s dramatic landscapes, gold-mine history, traditional performing arts, and depopulated communities.

The 2025-2026 edition is only the second iteration but has already established itself as one of Japan’s most unique art events.
The Sado Island Galaxy Art Festival 2025-2026 runs in three distinct periods totaling 142 days:
Artworks are installed across the entire island, with the main concentration along Ryotsu-ebisu Shopping Street near Ryotsu Port (former vacant shops transformed into galleries). International and Japanese artists including Mihoko Ogaki, Masahiro Usami, Jill Stassar, and Kenta Maruyama present installations, residence projects, and site-specific pieces that engage with Sado’s nature, history, and folklore.
The winter season offers a particularly magical experience with snow-covered artworks and fewer visitors.
If you’re coming to Japan or already in Japan, Jasumo can arrange ferry tickets, private island transport, guided art tours, onsen stays, and full multi-day itineraries. Just contact us using the contact page.
