Step into the birthplace of sake: Nara, Japan’s ancient capital and a spiritual hub where sake brewing began over a thousand years ago—not in factories, but within the sacred grounds of Buddhist temples.

This walking tour will take you to four tasting locations, including three operational sake breweries, each with its own history, brewing technique, and flavor profile. At each stop, you’ll sample sake fresh from the source while your guide explains the distinctive philosophies and approaches of each tōji.

As you stroll through Nara’s historic sake brewing districts, you’ll see how environment, ingredients, and tradition combine to create sake’s delicate complexity. Along the way, you’ll gain insights into how sake has remained intertwined with Japan’s climate, religious customs, and culinary culture.
