Begin your journey by meeting your guide at Kiyosumi Shirakawa Station. From there, walk together to a local sumo stable—a rare opportunity to enter a space normally closed to outsiders.

Once inside, take a seat near the ring and observe a traditional sumo practice session. You’ll see wrestlers of various ranks engaging in drills, sparring matches, and stretches as part of their morning routine. The experience is raw, disciplined, and deeply rooted in Japanese tradition.

Your guide will provide context throughout the session, explaining the structure of sumo ranks, training routines, and cultural significance of what you’re witnessing. This tour offers a rare, respectful look into the life of a sumo wrestler that even many locals never experience.

At the end of the session, if permitted by the wrestlers, you’ll have the opportunity to take photos with them—a unique souvenir of an unforgettable cultural experience.

“This was a great introduction to sumo. I appreciated watching the practice, though I would have liked to understand more about the wrestlers’ levels and ranks. Still, very informative and enjoyable!”

“An unforgettable highlight of my trip to Japan. I learned more than I expected and felt more connected to sumo than I would have at a tournament. I’d recommend this to anyone interested in Japanese culture.”
