What is the Saga International Balloon Fiesta?

The Saga International Balloon Fiesta is Asia’s largest and most prestigious hot air balloon festival, attracting balloonists and spectators from all over the world. Held annually in early November, this five-day event transforms the skies of Saga into a mesmerizing spectacle filled with over 100 hot air balloons, soaring in a magnificent display of colors and designs. Founded in 1980, the event has grown into an internationally recognized festival, hosting top-tier balloon pilots from over 15 countries. It serves as one of the key FAI (Fédération Aéronautique Internationale) certified balloon competitions, where professional balloonists compete in precision flying events.

The Saga International Balloon Fiesta is an unmissable experience for photographers, adventure seekers, and families looking for a truly magical and unique festival in Japan.

Festival Highlights

The event features a variety of exciting programs that appeal to visitors of all ages.

1. Hot Air Balloon Competition

Competition flights usually take off early in the morning, around 7:00 AM, making the sunrise an unforgettable backdrop for this breathtaking event.

2. Balloon Fantasia – Character Balloons & Fun for Families
One of the festival’s most popular attractions is Balloon Fantasia, where uniquely shaped balloons in the form of famous characters and animals take flight. From Doraemon and Pikachu to dinosaurs and beloved storybook figures, this event is a huge hit among families and children.

3. La Montgolfier Nocturne – Night Glow & Fireworks Show
As the sun sets, prepare for a magical night show where hot air balloons are illuminated by their burners, creating a dazzling display against the dark sky. Accompanied by live music performances, this event, known as La Montgolfier Nocturne, offers a dreamlike ambiance that is truly mesmerizing.

4. Hot Air Balloon School – Hands-On Experience

It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get up close and personal with these incredible flying machines.

5. Food Stalls & Local Specialties
No festival in Japan is complete without an amazing selection of Japanese street food. The event grounds are lined with food stalls selling delicious regional specialties from Saga Prefecture, including:

  • Saga Wagyu Beef – One of Japan’s top-quality wagyu beef varieties, known for its rich marbling.
  • Champon Noodles – A famous dish from Kyushu with a hearty seafood and pork broth.
