Step back in time and experience the elegance and pageantry of the Nara period (710–794) at the Tenpyō Festival 2026, one of the most immersive and culturally rich events in Japan. With vibrant parades, period reenactments, historical markets, and hands-on costume experiences, this one-day celebration brings the grandeur of ancient Japan to life.

Event Highlights

The Grand Tenpyō Procession

Witness a breathtaking parade of Emperor Shōmu, Empress Kōmyō, and aristocrats clad in elaborate Tenpyō-era robes, accompanied by gagaku (traditional court music). The parade captures the majesty and formality of the imperial court as it once appeared during the height of Nara’s rule.

Imperial Guards Reenactment (Eji-tai)

Enjoy a detailed reenactment of the Eji—the palace guards responsible for maintaining order and securing the gates of Heijō-kyō. This performance showcases their striking uniforms, processions, and the ceremonial opening and closing of Suzaku-mon Gate, all based on the Yōrō Clothing Ordinance.

Tenpyō Costume Experience

Transform into a noble from the Nara period. Try on beautifully recreated Tenpyō-era costumes—styled after Tang dynasty Hanfu—and stroll through the historic palace grounds like it’s the 8th century.
