Journey into the mysterious world of the maiko in Gion, Kyoto.
In the birthplace of maiko — Gion — stroll through the traditional streets of Kyoto while learning about maiko culture from a local guide.
After meeting at Gion Shijo Station, you’ll walk through the beautiful streets and preserved machiya architecture of Gion. Your local guide will share the rich history and cultural significance of the maiko, including fascinating details and traditions that even many Japanese visitors may not know.
Next, you’ll arrive at a traditional Kyoto machiya shop, where you’ll relax while your guide explains Kyoto cuisine, local drinks, and how to respectfully interact with a maiko. This insight ensures you enjoy the upcoming experience fully and appropriately.
You’ll then move to a Kyoto-style restaurant inside a 100-year-old machiya building. Here, you’ll enjoy an authentic multi-course meal and an all-you-can-drink menu that includes Kyoto’s local sake. The atmosphere is refined yet welcoming, offering a true taste of Kyoto hospitality.
The highlight of the evening is the arrival of the maiko. She will perform an elegant traditional dance, engage with guests in conversation, and participate in lighthearted drinking games — all accompanied by your guide’s support for smooth communication. “The dinner and performance by the maiko was excellent. Our tour guide was very professional and helped with translating with the maiko. This was the highlight of my trip to Kyoto.” — Gina
“The experience is worth every penny! It was the highlight of our trip to Japan. Hikari-san was amazing, our group was fun, humorous and lighthearted, and Maiko-san was not only stunningly beautiful but also fun and outgoing. We got to ask her questions, play games, and watch a breathtaking performance. Truly a peek behind the curtain of authentic culture. Highly recommend to everyone.”
“Excellent. I hope they keep the Maiko/Geiko tradition alive.”
