Contact Jasumo Now →With a natural 85mm focal length (FX) and a bright f/2.8 aperture, this manual focus lens is indispensable for professional architectural correction, creative portraiture, and highly detailed close-up photography. Its light weight of 635 grams makes it a versatile tool for precision shooting on the go.
This PC-E Micro lens offers unparalleled control over perspective and plane of focus, making it a favorite for architectural, product, and detailed studio work. Its medium telephoto reach is also surprisingly effective for subtle portraiture and creative close-ups during your travels in Japan.
The PC-E Micro NIKKOR 85mm f/2.8D features a compact optical design of 6 elements in 5 groups and utilizes the Nano Crystal Coat for excellent clarity. Unlike most modern lenses, this is a manual focus only lens, demanding precision, which is necessary when using the highly sensitive Tilt and Shift mechanisms.
The Shift function (up to plus minus 11.5 mm) is used primarily in architectural photography to make converging vertical lines parallel. The Tilt function (up to plus minus 8.5 degrees) rotates the lens relative to the sensor, enabling control over the plane of focus (Scheimpflug principle) for creative depth-of-field effects. The lens includes an electromagnetically driven aperture and a preset aperture mechanism for precise exposure control, especially with the use of the tilt mechanism.

PC (Perspective Control) lenses must be manually focused because the Shift and Tilt mechanisms alter the optical axis and the plane of focus, making reliable autofocus impossible. Precision is achieved by the photographer using the manual focus ring, often with the camera’s Live View magnification.
Older cameras that do not support the electromagnetic diaphragm (like D200, D100, D80, D70) will not be able to use the automatic aperture function. This means exposure control is more limited, often restricting shooting to Manual (M) exposure mode and requiring the photographer to use the preset aperture control on the lens. Full Tilt functionality may also cause vignetting on certain older bodies.
The 85mm Micro capability allows the photographer to focus extremely close (down to 0.39 m) for high-magnification shots (up to 1:2). The PC features can then be applied to these close-up shots. For example, using Tilt can ensure that a small, detailed subject that is lying at an angle to the sensor (like a Japanese coin or a fan) is entirely sharp from edge to edge.
The revolving mechanism allows the photographer to rotate the entire lens body, changing the orientation of the Shift and Tilt axes by 90 degrees. This means you can easily switch between shifting vertically (to correct keystone) and shifting horizontally (to widen the field of view without moving the camera) without needing to take the lens off the camera.
When mounted on a Nikon DX-format camera, the 85mm focal length is effectively multiplied by 1.5x, giving you a telephoto perspective equivalent to approximately 127.5mm. This makes it an excellent specialized lens for tele-macro work and flattering head-and-shoulder portraits with full Tilt/Shift functionality.
