Overview

Witness a historic dialogue between two giants of Japanese painting at the special exhibition “Two Masters: Kaii Higashiyama and Hiroshi Senju.” Hosted at Corasse Fukushima, this showcase brings together the serene, highly spiritual landscapes of Kaii Higashiyama and the powerful, contemporary resonance of Hiroshi Senju’s world-renowned “Waterfall” series. The exhibition explores themes of “tranquility” and “nature,” weaving a visual narrative intended to provide emotional recovery and inspiration to the people of Fukushima as the region marks 15 years since the Great East Japan Earthquake.

The collection features a total of 36 works, including rare public viewings of Higashiyama’s “Windy Beach” and Senju’s “Waterfall.” Higashiyama, known for his contemplative “Higashiyama Blue,” and Senju, famous for his monumental scale and traditional mineral pigment techniques, represent the pinnacle of postwar and contemporary Nihonga (Japanese-style painting). To support future talent, the event also features an open competition space adjacent to the main hall, displaying award-winning works from students and the general public that challenge the boundaries of beauty.

Why Attend

  • View a rare joint exhibition featuring 36 masterpieces from two of Japan’s most influential landscape painters, highlighting the evolution of Nihonga over several decades.
  • Experience the “Waterfall” series by Hiroshi Senju up close, a work that combines minimalist modern language with ancient Japanese painting materials and techniques.
  • Contribute to a meaningful cause, as a portion of all ticket proceeds will be donated to Fukushima Prefecture to support cultural promotion and the “Future of Children” initiative.
  • Explore the accompanying “Open Competition” gallery, which showcases the next generation of Japanese artists inspired by the legacies of Higashiyama and Senju.
