Full Description

Step into a quiet tatami room just across from Tokyo Tower and leave the bustle of the city behind. Your host—well-versed in both Japanese cultural arts and Zen philosophy—will begin by performing the tea ceremony, explaining the flow of movement, use of tools, and significance behind each gesture. As you sip matcha and enjoy handcrafted wagashi, you’ll learn about the role of “wabi-sabi” (beauty in imperfection), mindfulness, and presence.

The session then transitions into a guided practice, where you’ll take the host’s place and perform your own tea ceremony. This hands-on component helps deepen your understanding and provides a meditative, tactile experience that many find deeply memorable.

Throughout the session, you’ll gain insight into:

  • The symbolic meaning behind the tea room’s layout and objects
  • The history and evolution of tea ceremonies from samurai gatherings to modern cultural practice
  • How Zen Buddhism influenced Japanese rituals, design, and hospitality

Whether it’s your first visit to Japan or you’re a returning traveler with a love for culture, this experience will leave you with a deeper connection to Japanese tradition and a refreshed state of mind.
