History

Sagamiko Illumillion launched in 2009 as a modest winter light display at Sagamiko Resort Pleasure Forest (opened 1972 as a camping and outdoor recreation park). The first season used just 500,000 bulbs, but visitor enthusiasm quickly turned it into an annual mega-event.

By 2012 it had grown to 3 million lights and introduced signature zones like the Cathedral of Light and Tunnel of Light. In 2016 the park rebranded the illumination as Illumillion—a portmanteau of “illumination” and “million”—reflecting the ever-expanding scale (now over 6 million LEDs). The event has consistently ranked in Japan’s Top 3 night views and won multiple national illumination awards.

Unique to Sagamiko is its integration with the daytime Pleasure Forest amusement park—rides like the Mt. Fuji-shaped Ferris wheel and Japan’s largest mirror maze stay open under the lights, creating a rare “illumination + attractions” hybrid that runs for an astonishing six months each year.

Overview

The Sagamiko Illumillion 2025-2026 runs from November 15, 2025 to May 10, 2026 at Sagamiko Resort Pleasure Forest, transforming the mountain park into one of Japan’s largest and longest illuminations with over 6 million LEDs.

Visitors enter through arches of light and explore themed zones: the glowing Blue Forest, majestic Cathedral of Light with synchronized music, colorful Butterfly Garden, and the iconic Tunnel of Light. Rides—including the illuminated Mt. Fuji Ferris wheel and mirror maze—operate at night, while Paddington Bear welcomes guests at the Central Lodge.

The long season (one of Japan’s longest) allows enjoyment alongside winter snow, spring cherry blossoms, and Golden Week crowds.

Highlights

  • Cathedral of Light: Golden pipe-organ-style installation with synchronized music and stained-glass effects.
  • Blue Forest & River of Light: Ethereal blue hillside with flowing light “river” and meadow illusions.
  • Butterfly Garden: Colorful floral zone with hovering butterfly lights.
  • Mt. Fuji Ferris Wheel: 60-meter wheel glowing as Japan’s sacred peak.
  • Tunnel of Light: Dazzling transition tunnel shifting colors and patterns.
