The Day of Mishima holds cultural significance in Japan as an artistic tribute to Yukio Mishima, one of the nations most celebrated and dramatic twentieth-century literary figures. Held annually on the anniversary of Mishimas death this production bridges classical literature, cinema and live concert performance. Following their acclaimed performance for Mishimas centennial anniversary, at Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall crossover violinist Ikuko Kawai and pianist Maki Namekawa reunite to explore Mishimas complex aesthetic world through two distinct musical compositions.
The performance program balances Maki Namekawa’s interpretation of Philip Glass’s solo piano suite from the biographical film MISHIMA and Ikuko Kawai’s stage production, The Staggering of Virtue. Kawai’s suite integrates narration, traditional Japanese musical motifs and Western chamber instruments such as bandoneon, double bass and percussion. Japanese audiences hold respect for genre‑defying arrangements that honor classic national literature. Furthermore holding this concert at TOPPAN Hall, which is located close to Ichigaya where Mishima spent his final moments adds an extraordinary layer of poignant atmosphere to the evening. For visitors attending The Day of Mishima offers a rare immersive entry, into high Japanese literature transformed into compelling contemporary stage art.
