Construction on Hikone Castle Combined Ticket in 1604 under the command of the 井伊 (Ii) clan, taking approximately twenty years to reach completion. Unlike many Japanese castles that suffered extensive damage or required modern reconstruction, the inner moat area of Hikone Castle retains its original planar structure and defensive stone walls in remarkably well-preserved condition. Because of this structural integrity, the site was designated a national historic site in 1951, upgrad to a special historic site in 1956, and formally registered as a national treasure of Japan.

It features a sophisticated multi-tiered wooden design incorporating decorative gable roofs and defensive loopholes, reflecting both military utility and aesthetic restraint from the Edo period. Visitors walking through the gates traverse paths originally designed to disorient invading forces, passing through hidden defensive gates and up steep stone staircases that overlook Lake Biwa and the surrounding city of Hikone.
Directly adjacent to the castle grounds lies Genkyu-en Garden, a daimyo garden constructed in 1677 by the fourth lord of Hikone Domain, Ii Naoki. Modelled after a Chinese imperial retreat palace, the garden centres around a large pond featuring four small islands connected by arched wooden bridges. Designed as a strolling garden, it offers carefully framed perspectives of the castle keep rising above the surrounding greenery. Throughout the year, the landscape transforms with the seasons, from spring cherry blossoms and summer foliage to vibrant autumn colours and winter snowscapes.
You just cannot get the feeling from looking at pictures of Japanese buildings and gardens as you do when you are actually walking around a real castle from a long time ago. When you are inside the wooden tower with many floors you can really see how the wood is put together.. You can see the ways that the people in charge a long time ago built things to protect themselves. Walking around the Genkyu-en Garden is really cool because you can see how the rich samurai people used the natural land and water to show off their power and good taste. They even used ideas from countries to make their gardens look nice. If you get a ticket that lets you into both places you can see both the strong and artistic sides of Japans old history all in one visit, to the Japanese castle and garden.
